SUN SAFETY POLICY
The Total Martial Arts Centre (TMAC) seeks to promote:
- an awareness of the dangers of exposure to the sun and the need for protective measures;
- the need for positive attitudes and responsible behaviours towards skin protection; and
- practices which can reduce the incidence of skin cancer.
Background
Australia has one of the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Levels of ultraviolet radiation are particularly high in locations within Western Australia.
Some training and events conducted by TMAC may be conducted outdoors and in locations which have potential for high levels of ultraviolet radiation, particularly at certain times of the day.
Guidelines
It is incumbent on TMAC to protect students and staff, to the greatest extent possible, from the dangers of exposure to the sun.
In order to ensure that all participants at TMAC events are afforded the best possible protection from skin damage caused by the sun, the following strategies are recommended:
- Instructors should ensure that clothing is suitable for the locations to be visited and that sun protection hats are included when travelling to high sun risk venues.
- Outdoor activities should, where possible, be scheduled to avoid the identified high risk times (1000 hrs to 1500hrs).
- Where possible adequate shade areas are to be provided at outdoor venues.
- Instructors should ensure that they provide students with adequate instruction on sun sense and protection measures.
- Instructors should ensure that they model behaviours which are appropriate.
- Instructors should ensure that they encourage personal protection measures for students at all times, including:
- enforcing the wearing of hats when in the sun.
- enforcing the use of broad spectrum sunscreen.
- encouraging the use of available shade areas whenever possible.
The above are protective measures which TMAC encourages all participants to embrace so as to ensure that appropriate precautions
